Giambattista Tiepolo
(Venice 1696–1770 Madrid)
St. Roch with the dog, oil on canvas, 43.8 x 33 cm, unframed,
Certificate: George Knox, Vancouver.,
Provenance: Pfatschbacher Collection, Linz. ,
This painting, as yet unpublished, belongs to a series of devotional images in small format which depict St. Roch who was very popular in Venice. Antonio Morassi (in: Complete Catalogue of the Paintings of G. B. Tiepolo, London 1962, pl. 154–171) lists 18 of these pictures, whilst in his later catalogue raisonné (Gemin & Pedrocco) he refers to 22 images of St. Roch. Tiepolo obviously wanted to signal his affinity with the Scuola di S. Rocco in Venice with these pictures. His paintings and the works of other contemporary artists were exhibited every year on the S. Roch’s saint’s day, 16 August. George Knox writes that the series of St. Roch pictures may be interpreted as a demonstration of Tiepolo’s ability in “invenzione”. It is a brilliant series with variations on the theme.
